Remember to Remember
Notes from Lance Shumake's sermon on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Sermon text: 2 Peter 1:12-15
Why do we need to remember to remember?
—all of us have a tendency to forget
Psalm 106:7-13 "Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power. He rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry, and he led them through the deep as through a desert. So he saved them from the hand of the foe and redeemed them from the power of the enemy. And the waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel."
—it’s a command throughout scripture
—it awakens us to God’s greatness
—it spurs us on to live for Him
—it’s a great defense against false teaching
How can we ensure that we always remember?
—continually focus on the gospel
—regularly read and study God’s Word
—faithfully teach the next generation
—consistently gather with God’s people
—routinely preach the gospel to yourself
“We need to hear the gospel everyday because we forget it everyday.”
—Martin Luther
“Preach the gospel to yourself everyday.”
—Jerry Bridges
“Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself?”
—Martyn Lloyd Jones, Spiritual Depression
“No one is more influential in your life than you are because no one talks to you more than you do. It’s a fact that you and I are in an endless conversation with ourselves.”
—Paul David Tripp, New Morning Mercies
