God Forgives

Notes from Marc Bauder's sermon on Sunday, July 5, 2026.
Sermon text: Psalm 51 & 32

Our sin
Is deeper than we think
Destroys us when hidden
Deserves God’s judgment

God’s forgiveness
Begins with his mercy
Cleanses us

Isaiah 53:5-6 (CSB): “But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the LORD has punished him for the iniquity of us all."

Renews what sin has broken
“We must be born again. This is not a change of opinion, or a change of outward conduct; it is a change of nature. It is the communication of a new life… You can no more change your own heart than a leopard can change his spots.” - J.C. Ryle

Is received through repentance

Produces joy and worship

“My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things: that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Savior.” - John Newton

Discipleship Questions:

  1. How does shifting your baseline from other people to God’s holiness change the way you view your daily choices, hidden habits, and attitudes?
  2. What is the difference between wanting forgiveness and wanting to be changed?
  3. Are there past sins or failures that you still struggle to believe God has fully forgiven? What truths from Psalm 51 and Psalm 32 help you fight ongoing guilt?
  4. David prayed for the restoration of the joy of his salvation. What tends to steal your joy in Christ, and how does the gospel restore it?
  5. Is there anything you’ve been holding onto that you need to confess and bring into the light?
