God Instructs

Notes from Ky Martin's sermon on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
Sermon text: Psalm 19

God’s Instructions come…

Through Nature
Rom 1:19-20 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

David shows how it is that the heavens proclaim to us the glory of God, namely, by openly bearing testimony that they have not been put together by chance, but were wonderfully created by the supreme Architect. - John Calvin

Through His Word

God’s word…

Revives us

“Laden with guilt, and full of fears, I fly to Thee, my Lord, And not a ray of hope appears but in Thy written word. The volume of my Father's grace does all my grief assuage; Here I behold my Savior's face in every page” -Isaac Watts

Makes us wise
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

"For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains…he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries. Welcome to the club.” -Robert Jastrow

Gives us joy
John 8:31-32 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Psalm 3:5-6 I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. 6 I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.

Psalm 4:6-7 There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!” 7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
"To see Him and know Him and be in His presence is the soul's final feast. Beyond this there is no quest. Words fail. We call it pleasure, joy, delight. But these are weak pointers to the unspeakable experience.” John Piper.

Is eternal
Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.
Psalm 33:6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.

Is desirable
Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
